Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Takedown Savage Model 99, 1899 -- Lever Action Rifle .300 Cal. Savage - C&R OK

LSB#: 120405RF01

Make: Savage

Model: 99/1899

Serial Number: 276417

Year of Manufacture: 1918 or 1925

Caliber: .300 Savage

Action Type: Lever Action, Internal Rotary Magazine

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Manufactured by Savage Arms Corp. Utica N.Y. U.S.A. / July 25 1893, Oct 3 1899 Sep 10 1907 May25 1909 June 1 1909 Savage “, and near the receiver “Hi-Pressure Steel / Sav. .300”. The serial number is found on the bottom of the receiver and on the forend wood. The bottom of the barrel is marked “OFF” with an arrow.

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a fixed ramped pinned front sight and no rear sight. There are scope mount bases installed - numbered 14 at the rear and 19 forward. These mounts will accommodate Picatinny type scope rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered wood. The checkering has become smooth. There are two cracks in the forend, one on the left side at the front (about 2” long) and on the right side at the rear about 4” long. The buttstock wood shows a small crack on the left side behind the trigger guard. The top of the buttstock behind the receiver looks like it may have been slightly modified. Please see our photos. The LOP measures approx. 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition for their age.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is shallow. There is pitting and erosion present..

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning on the barrel and receiver. There are a couple of nicks on the top of the barrel about 10” back from the muzzle. There is some pinprick erosion just starting on the right side of the receiver. The finish is gone from the bottom of the receiver. The lever and upper and lower tang show more blue. There is surface erosion on the top of the bolt. This rifle shows a general drift to patina, giving it a pleasing look, consisten with its age. The Screw heads are serviceable and show minor wear. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. When the forend wood is removed there is a dovetail slot visible about 6 ½” forward of the receiver. When viewing the barrel/receiver mated edge we see a slot in the barrel and the extension of the receiver, however, attempts to turn the barrel by hand are not successful. There is an arrow with the word “OFF” at the barrel slot. The forend has much metal and a square cut metal insert that doesn’t mate with any part of the barrel. This gun may be a takedown – please give us a lesson someone!

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This is a pre-war example of a popular lever action rifle in .300 Savage – a gun that almost was adopted as the primary US Battle rifle of the period. This may or may not be the rarer takedown version. It has a takedown forend and when removed, none of the rotary parts come out, so the lower seems like it is a takedown. We are not sure on the barrel section, although the word “OFF” with an arrow is marked on the underside. Attention collectors, please tell us what we are missing here.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California and is C&R eligible.
