Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army -- 44 Cal. Cap & Ball Percussion Revolver - Antique

LSB#: 120404JF10

Make: Colt

Model: 1860

Serial Number: 101075

Year of Manufacture: 1863

Caliber: .44 Cal. Percussion

Action Type: Single Action Percussion Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked ‘Address Col. Sam Colt New York U.S. Of America”. This marking is light and only partially legible. The left side of the frame is marked “Colt’s / Patent”. The barrel, frame, trigger guard and the back strap are marked “101075”. We could not remove the wedge to check. The front strap, behind the trigger guard is marked with a “D”. The cylinder is marked with two “F”s. The left side of the barrel is marked “CG” and the right side of the barrel is marked “H”. We cannot make out the serial number on the cylinder.

Barrel Length: 8”

Sights / Optics: This revolver is mounted with a notched hammer rear sight and a low blade front sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are oiled wood. There is a very faint cartouche on the left panel (we think). The edges of the panels are a bit worn and the surfaces show just marking. The grips are otherwise sound and free of cracks. The grips rate in about Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue / Case Color

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray, but strong. The rifling is actually visible the entire length and near sharp, though showing wear. There is erosion and pitting throughout the bore, but the bore rates better than average for this model and vintage.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 20% of its metal finish. There is scattered erosion throughout the exterior, but primarily on the hammer and barrel. The metal is almost bare and has developed a nice and light patina. The loading ram screw is missing. There is scattered heavier pitting, most noticeable on the left side of the barrel above the loading ram screw hole. The revolver shows nice age – though it has likely been cleaned a long time ago and natural patina has formed. The Screw heads are serviceable, though just a bit worn. The markings are light, but present. Overall, this revolver rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This is an honest and relatively early example of one of the primary Civil War side arms. More than 200,000 were manufactured from 1860 through 1873. Colt's biggest customer of these revolvers was the U.S. Government with over 127,000 units being purchased and issued to the troops. This is a well marked and acceptable example of this important and early firearm.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique revolver can be sold in California to anyone 18 years of age with valid ID.
