Model: Model 1894
Serial Number: 21179811
Year of Manufacture: 1979
Caliber: .44 Special and .44 Magnum
Action Type: Lever Action Rifle Magazine Tube Fed
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN< CONN., U.S.A. / MOD. 1894 – MICRO-GROOVE BARREL CAL. 44 REM. MAG.”
Barrel Length: 20”
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a post front sight on a ramp with a removable hood. The rear of the post has been painted a bright orange/red. The rear elevator style sight has been removed and a blank nicely fitted into the barrel dovetail. A Williams receiver peep sight is mounted as the rear sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece stocks are wood. The butt stock has some compression marks on the bottom towards the rear and there is some finish missing where the brown Pachmayer White Line recoil pad has been fitted. The recoil pad is still pliable. There is what appears to be a hairline crack that follows the grain on the lower right side of the forearm. This may not go all the way through; however we have not removed the forearm. The LOP measures 14 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original W/ Touch Up
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the Micro-Groove rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There are three small marks on the muzzle crown.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish. The top of the barrel shows some thinning and possibly cold blue touch up where the rear sight dove tail has been expertly fitted with a blank. This area is smooth to the touch and has a slightly brown patina. The balance of the metal work retains its factory finish. The Screw heads are sharp, but appear to have been turned. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is an ambidextrous hammer extension provided.
Our Assessment: This rifle appears to have been set up for hunting at up to 100 yards. It still works for this purpose. With its excellent balance it carries easily and would be a great field gun. Sling swivels have been mounted, one on the magazine tube and the other in the Marlin “Bullseye” of the butt stock. By removing the receiver sight and fitting this rifle with a tang sight, it would make good Cowboy Action pistol caliber lever gun. This is the companion to that .44 magnum hogleg you’ve been toting.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California.
