Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Savage Model 1899 / 99 -- .30-30 WCF Lever Action Rifle - C&R OK,

LSB#: 120328GM01

Make: Savage

Model: 1899

Serial Number: 11.694

Year of Manufacture: Post 1909

Caliber: .30-30 Winchester

Action Type: Lever Action, Rotary Magazine

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “”Manufactured By Savage Arms Corp. Utica N.Y. U.S.A. / July 25, 1893. Oct. 3. 1899. Sep. 10. 1907. May. 25. 1909. June. 1. 1909.”. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked “Savage Hi-Pressure Steel / 30-30”.

Barrel Length: 21 ¾”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a blade front sight in a dovetail slot and a rear leaf sight with elevator. The elevator is present.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are darkly colored wood. The buttstock wood has dried out a bit and there are several hairline cracks along the grain, this is visible on both sides of the buttstock behind the receiver, and on the buttstock near the buttplate. There is a compression mark on the right side of the wrist at the tang. There is a ding that damaged the edge of the forend wood, about 3” back from the end on the left side. There are no major cracks or other losses. The stocks are in need of some TLC and a good oiling. The LOP measures approx. 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the steel buttplate. The stocks rate in about Fair - Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dull and the rifling is medium deep. There is erosion and light rust in the flats. This bore will likely improve with a good cleaning and some elbow grease.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 50% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows nice blue on the barrel with plum patina on the receiver and lever. There is scattered surface erosion on the receiver and the lever, and some pitting and finish loss on the barrel. The barrel shows some scratch marks and finish loss and some light surface pitting across the top of the barrel and sides at the point of the writing on the barrel, about 13” back from the muzzle. There are other marks and finish loss along the left side of the barrel at the wood. Please see our photos. The Screw heads are in good serviceable condition, showing use and minor disfiguration. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Fair condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The counter works. We have not fired this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99 is a very unique rifle! The gun features a number of innovative features; a rotary magazine, which allows for the use of aerodynamically-efficient spitzer bullets, a round counter visible from the left side of the receiver, a cocking indicator, a hammerless design, which makes for an extremely short lock time, and ease of handling in brushy conditions; it is a remarkable technological achievement. It was once considered a viable candidate as a US military battle rifle!

This is an early rifle. Its serial number suggests 1899 / 1900 but the barrel has a patent date showing 1909. We cant explain the difference. According to the Savage 99 website, there are many instances of “out of sequence” production. In any case, this is a nice old Savage for your collection that is still in good working order.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California.
