Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are replaced hard wood. The stock is a bit larger dimensionally than an original, but the fit is acceptable and a bit proud. There are surface marks and areas of discoloration in contact with the metal, but no splits or cracks. The LOP measures 14 ¾”. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue – Now Mottled Patina
Finish Originality: Factory Original
Bore Condition: The bore is almost bright and the rifling is pronounced and visible the entire length. There is scattered erosion and pitting in the bore, though this is still one of the better Maynard bores we have seen.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 10% of its metal finish, in protected areas only. The exterior of the rifle has turned a light patina, with a mottled finish and scattered erosion and pitting throughout. The metal is quite smooth and the markings are all legible. There is some scattered surface rust that will clean. The upper tang shows some metal work under the patina and the lower tang shows a possible repair at the screw. The Screw heads are very serviceable, though a bit worn. The markings are legible and clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Fair - Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions but there is no spring tension on the hammer. This feels like a broken spring, though the exact reason is unknown. We did not fire this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: With only about 20,000 of these rifles ever made, in all configurations, this is a rare rifle. This is a true gem from the Civil War and an important and historic American arm. No Civil war or American firearms collection is complete without a Maynard.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique rifle can be sold in California to anyone 18 years of age with valid ID.
