Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - BSA Enfield 1936 SHTLE SMLE -- .303 British Bolt Action Rifle, Non Import, C&R OK

LSB#: 120309ML34

Make: Enfield

Model: SHTLE
Serial Number: 12100

Year of Manufacture: 1936

Caliber: .303 British

Action Type: Bolt Action, Removable Magazine

Markings: The right side of the stock band is marked with a crown over “GR” / B.S.A. Co. / 1936 / SHTLE / III *”. The left side of the safety lever is marked “III”. There are two proof marks on the left side of the receiver ring and two on the top of the chamber. The back of the bolt handle is marked “ 7/oo”. The front of the bayonet lug / sight guard is marked “L12100”.

Barrel Length: 25 ½”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with standard military SMLE sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are original military wood. There are compression marks, dings, age and discoloration present. This is apparently the original piece of wood that may have been lightly cleaned one, but never refinished. There are no splits or cracks and the wood actually has a nicely aged appearance. The LOP measures approx. 12 ½”. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Military Blue

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is near bright and the rifling is sharp and deep. There is mild erosion in the grooves, though this is extremely light and the bore looks better than the exterior.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear and thinning to the original finish, with mottling, patina and surface rust throughout. The surface rust is heavies ton the nose cap and barrel bands. The frame finish has thinned and mottled and eroded the metal a bit. This rifle has a nice, untouched and honestly aged appearance. The screw heads are mostly in good serviceable condition, with a few showing some disfiguration. The markings are legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. The magazine cutoff is present. It is rare to find this feature still intact. .

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Here is an honest looking Enfield SHTLE, manufactured by Birmingham Small Arms Co. It has never been refinished, and looks today like it probably did the day it was retired after WWII. This is a good example of a WWII rifle and is still a shooter with a strong bore. If you are a WWII re-enactor or collector of British Rifles, this is a find.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California and is C&R eligible.

Questions for Users
(Public)
Q:  Are the barrel, nose cap and rear sight numbered to match the receiver? Does the date stamped on the barrel match the date on the wrist? Is the rifle import marked (and if so, where)? Does the rifle have standard British proof marks? Is the magazine cut-off present (it doesn't look to be, in your photos)? Thanks! 05/09/2012
A:  Hi, Yes, the nose cap, and the rear sight do match. I did not see the numbers on the barrel, I don't know where to find it unless it is under the wood. I do not see any import markings anywhere. I do not know exactly how the standard proof marks differ from non standard, but blowing up our high res photographs might reveal more. I do not see a magazine cut off. Thanks for your interest. John 05/10/2012
