The most effective gun mounted on the Sherman tank was the 76mm Gun. This is a prototype projectile from the first lot of this A.P. seated in an experimental case for the tank - antitank gun . Projectile marked " FAE 1 " FRANKFORD ARSENAL EXPERIMENTAL 1 . This came from a design engineer who worked on the project at FA.The complex multiple driving band for use in high velocity gun is very impressive. Composite aluminum , steel and copper projectile with heavy core. VERY HEAVY.
This gun was used on the Sherman and also the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer and has the distinction of having destroyed more enemy armor than any other gun ever fielded by the USA.
