Buyer Tip: If you're the High Bidder in an auction when it closes, don't assume you're the final High Bidder. Someone could outbid you in the final seconds of the auction if your Max Bid isn't high enough. You're not the high Bidder until you've been notified by email that you are. All Auctions are conducted in Pacific Time.

Fine CW Non Regulation Field & Staff Sword

Fine CW Non Regulation Field & Staff Sword

For collectors of edged

weapons of the Civil War, there is perhaps no more

attractive sword for the regular officers than the

“non-regulation” field and staff officer’s saber. The “non-regulation” pertains to the fact that these swords were imported from Europe and offered

through private purchase through many dealers

who provided weapons and accoutrements to “volunteer” officers. Volunteer officers were not issued materiel for service-they had to buy them and many a “gift” saber cam efrom family members or subordinates who raised funds to buy a sword for

an officer going off to war. The large majority of these sabers came from Germany and were specifically made and earmarked for the American market. This sword is marked and made by the well-known German maker Horster off Solingen and is in

excellent condition. The sword has a basket guard with beautiful “U.S.” and Amercian eagle on it and the grip retains about 99.9% of its sharkskin wrapping.

The entire hilt and blade have a very, very old nickel finish to it and overall retains about 98-99% of this finish (just flaking I n a couple of spots). This nickel has preserved the acid- etched military motifs on blade. A very fine and attractive Civil War sword.
