Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Winchester Model 94 .32-40 -- John Wayne Commemorative, C&R OK - In The Box

LSB#: 111222XX07

Make: Winchester

Model: Model 94

Serial Number: JW10232

Year of Manufacture: 1981, this gun is listed in the ATF Curio and Relics Section II, page 32.

Caliber: .32-40

Action Type: Lever Action Rifle (Large Loop Carbine)

Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked "John Wayne Commemorative". The left side of the octagonal barrel is marked "Winchester Model 94 .38-55 Win. / Made in New Haven Conn. U.S.A. Winchester Proof Steel". The serial number is on the underside of the frame and the Winchester proof is on the barrel at the receiver. Both flats of the receiver are nicely engraved with The Duke's movies and scenes from the same.

Barrel Length: 18 1/2”

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a dovetail set front sight and a dovetail set leaf with elevator rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock(s) is/are nicely grained walnut showing sharp checkering and no wear. The gun was once apparently dropped on the left heel of the butt plate. This drop caused a slight mar on the corner of the buttplate, a slight depression at the left heel of the stock and a repaired crack at the right wrist. This one little drop is the only wear or imperfection on the gun. The stocks rate about new with just a bit of dirt in the checkering on the right side of the wrist.

Type of Finish: The receiver, lever, barrel bands, and medallion in stock are plated, and the barrel and magazine tube are blue.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The rifling is sharp and deep though showing some fouling from the factory test round. Our consignor was the original owner of this gun and claims to have never fired it. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 99.9% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows storage wear only in the form of slight surface marring to the more fragile plated surfaces. The only true wear on the piece is to the stock and buttplate, where one unfortunate drop by a careless “butterfinger” took this rifle out of the 100% category. The lever and base of the receiver show slight internal wear from operating the action, but our consignor says this is an unfired rifle. The screw heads are sharp and unturned with the exception of the stock and plate screws which have no wear but have been removed for repair to the wood. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this gun..

Box & Accessories: One original box of John Wayne Commemorative 32-40 ammunition is included. The original rifle box is included with this gun. The box shows tatters and a few creases, but is otherwise sound and complete. Also included is: the original hang tag, outer box and inner Styrofoam, wax paper, Hunter’s Pocket Guide, Purchase Record Card (wrong serial number), Instruction Manual and the saddle ring leather.

Our Assessment: John Wayne stood larger than life on the silver screen, and just as tall in real life. During his long career, he appeared in more than 150 films, and audiences around the world recognized him as the one man who best represented the patriotic spirit of America. More than 25 years after his death, John Wayne still ranks among the top 10 most popular movie stars in the annual Harris Poll, and his movies continue to be viewed by millions of Americans, ensuring his status as a legendary American icon.

His commemorative rifle has become almost as iconic as the man himself, and are themselves among the most collected of the Commemoratives, probably the most collected and valuable. This example comes complete as it was purchased off the shelf in 1981 with the original box. You’ll look long and hard to find a better one.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This gun can be transferred in California, and is C&R eligible.
