Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - MERWIN-HULBERT ~ 1876 OPEN-TOP -- FRONTIER ARMY MODEL...44-40 WCF...Antique, NO FFL

NO RESERVE!! Here's a very interesting revolver that probably saw use on the American frontier. This is a Merwin, Hulbert & Co. "Model 1876" Single-Action. This is the earlier "Open Top" design without a top strap. It has a square butt, "scoop" cylinder flutes, a barrel wedge, and a single screw above the trigger guard, identifying it as a "2nd Type" 1876 Frontier Army. It chambers the .44-40 (.44 WCF) and is marked "Calibre Winchester 1873" on the left side of the frame. The barrel measures 7-inches in length and there is a lanyard ring in the butt. The single feature that made the Merwin-Hulbert revolvers stand out from the contemporary competitors was the unique "twist & pull" design for opening the action and quickly ejecting empty shells. By releasing the latch at the bottom/forward of the frame the barrel is freed to rotate 90-degrees and then come forward, bringing the cylinder with it, thus allowing just the spent cases to fall from the gun. Loading is accomplished through a sliding gate on the right side of the frame. Overall condition is good and the gun functions well. There is some minor looseness between the frame and barrel sections. The revolver indexes properly and locks up fairly well. The bore shows strong rifling with typical black-powder pitting. The serial number on the butt is 10946, while the barrel and cylinder display assembly number 2539. There is some old faded nickel remaining on the cylinder but the gun is mostly a brown patina with some fine pitting and handling wear. Obviously carried quite a bit, the edges of the muzzle show rounding. The various factory markings are visible. The hard rubber grips are in good condition, showing smoothing from carry and use, but no cracks or large chips. A previous owner has lightly etched his initials at the top of each grip panel. This is a neat old revolver who many believe was the finest handgun available at the time.

Buyer pays $20.00 shipping. This is an antique revolver and as such, no FFL is required for transfer and in most areas it can be shipped directly to the winning bidder. There are exceptions (New Jersey, New York, etc) where an FFL transfer may still be required. Please know your local laws before bidding. Bidder must be a minimum of 21 years old and willing to provide proof of age with payment.

Questions for Users
(Public)
Q:  Hi, might be the pic but it looks like the bore is very rusty? 02/16/2012
A:  The bore shows strong rifling but also moderate pitting throughout....fairly typical of a gun used hard on the frontier. The edges of the muzzle also show lots of wear/rounding...typical of a revolver that was carried a lot. I'll have a full description added to that auction soon. Thanks, Mark 02/16/2012
