Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Enfield Musket Sergeant's Tool -- Civil War Rare T Tool w/all Parts, Never Used

Rare & Unused Enfield Sergeant’s Combination tool issued with British Enfields imported for use in the War Between the States.

This is an original British Enfield Sergeant's Combination Tool or T-Tool. These tools incorporated the following :

• Top of the shaft is a drift pin / oiler screwed into the top of the central shaft which has a chamber within it to hold oil

• Shaft has a built in mainspring vise and with a swiveling vent pick attached to the reverse of the vise by a screw

• Bottom of the shaft is also threaded to hold the ball puller / ball screw, and once this is removed, the end of the shaft serves as a nipple wrench.

• Crosspiece is a screw driver that can be removed by unscrewing the drift pin, and holds a worm / wiper that screws into the opposite end of the screwdriver blade.

I think this tool has never been used, and the tool retains most of the original blued finish. These tools were issued only to Sergeants in the British Army on the basis that Sergeants were the only ones in the field that could be trusted with a mainspring vise used to dismantle a rifle lock.

Any of the Enfield T tools are rare in their own right, and the Sergeants tool is the rarest of them all. The tool is in solid shape, will display well, and is both real and completely original! Most of the ones I have seen have the British War Department markings of WD or the Broad Arrow, and so would not have been imported for our War. This one does not, and so could well have been imported along with the hundreds of thousands of private maker Enfield rifle-muskets imported here.
