Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Colt -- 'Thunderer' in .41 Long

This revolver is marked on the top of the barrel, the top of the frame, the left side of the frame, and the bottom of the frame as shown below: COLT D.A. 41 COLT'S PT F.A. MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA PAT SEPT 19 1871 SEP 15 74 JAN 19 75 1256XX (SN) It has been 'shot loose' and the lockwork repaired to tighten the action. It functions in both SA and DA mode, indexing better in SA; I recommend that it not be fired, as 'shaving lead' or worse is possible. The finish is worn down to the steel in places, and starting to go brown. The original grips are in place, and a newer replacement pair is included.

Questions for Users
(Public)
Q:  I am still interested you say shot lose is there any physical damage to the forcing cone, barrel or cylinder? thanks 02/15/2012
A:  I took out the cylinder and checked the items you mentioned: The forcing cone looks good, lands are visible right up to the end, the barrel has acquired some small spots of rust/fouling during its 40 years in storage, and the cyl- inder has some powder erosion on the outside at the front of each chamber. The looseness is in the action. This was one of the first double-actions, and the design is a bit delicate. After enough firing, the cylinder develops some play, and the lockwork may jam. I stripped this revolver down when I inherited it, and _very_carefully_ adjusted the lockwork, - think I had to add a shim to hold things in position - I then fired it enough to make sure it was safe, and put it in storage. Even though it is safe to shoot, I would recommend against it; At well over 100 years old, it deserves to retire. Note that I have dropped the prices to 500/750. 02/15/2012
