A Model 1898 Krag Carbine. Serial 126348. Manufactured September 1898. Fitted with the original M1898 carbine sight with the 0.485" base and "C" on both base and eyepiece. Since these sights were calibrated for the unsuccessful 2200 fps ammunition, most were replaced in service with the M1896 sight/handguard/barrel band, and later converted to the 1902 configuration. The weapon has been restocked with the M1899 carbine stock which was longer, used the M1898 hanguard (for the M1898 sight), and eliminated the saddle ring. [NOTE: picture 4 shows the differences in the stock between the M1896/1898 carbine stock and the M1899]. Since the stock was replaced in service, it was not cartouched on the left side and does not have the "P" firing proof on the wrist. Band is the M1896 Cadet Rifle band (without the sight protector) used on all M1899 carbines. [NOTE: band has a hole drilled in the bottom?]. Overall 85%+ finish on metal. Wood is excellent with normal wear, but no chips or cracks. Bore is excellent - very sharp and shiny - and easily passes the bullet test for muzzle erosion.
