Offered herein is what we feel is a very fine
opportunity for the cowboy action shooting enthusiast
to acquire a vintage Winchester Model 1897 pump
action to modify for competition.
or just for a vinate shooting enthusiast who wants a versatile old classic Winchester pump shotgun. We have had over the years many, many examples of this classic shotgun (with our offices only a few miles away from the original factory). We get them in all types of condition, and on occasion in a state which would offer an opportunity for the cowboy action shooter (such as this being fitted long ago with a polychoke
or shortened for other reasons). This specimen, serial number 294456,
was manufactured circa 1906 (making it a Curio & Relic).At one point in its “history” it had two things change it from the original and most probably doen at the same time. The shotgun, originally chambered in full choke was undoubtedly returned to the Winchester factory and changed to MODIFIED.
We have seen a number of times this occurred as the original factory stamp of “FULL” is crossed out and “MOD” stamped in its place, using original factory die to stamp. We have frequently requested factory records which usually show original shipment date and return date “for repair” or change. Also, and probably at the same time a polychoke was added to the barrel giving the 12 gauge shotgun greater versatilityThe metal on this specimen is in fine shape with use but gun shows no rust or pitting and a good portion of original blue remains (remainder a greyish patina). Markings are sharp, serial numbers matching. Bore is used but no rust or pitting and should be fine for continued use- as a cowboy action shotgun or just an enjoyable vintage shotgun.
