Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Whittemore -- Inventor's Experimental Military .52 Rifle C. 1872

Experimental Military .52 Single Shot Rifle C. 1872

Offered herein and just

acquired from a prestigious arms collection is this “inventor’s model” , experimental single shot military rifle made by James Whittemore of Augusta, Maine.

Whittemore, a military officer patented

this rifle under U.S. Patent No. 131921.

It was made at the Kennebec Arsenal in Augusta,

Maine by Whittemore while he was commander of that post. It incorporates a mechanism he patented on October 1st, 1872. We have included

images taken from the U.S. Patent however interested buyers can visit the website by going to URL http://www.google.com/patents?id=6SREAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4#v=onepage&q&f=false to read the abstract and view complete patent drawings.

This military model was submitted for trial to the U.S. Ordnance Department in May, 1873 and is noted as Item #36 submitted by Capt. James M. Whittemore.

This can be found in Ordnance No. 15 “Report of the Board of Officers Appointed For the Purpose of Selecting a Breech System for the Muskets and Carbines of the Military Service”, Washington, 1873. The overall length of the rifle is 48.5” with a 32-1/2” barrel. Caliber .52. Weight 9.5 pounds. It has a full round barrel secured with 2 barrel bands, full walnut two piece stock with steel cap on forend. The frame is steel with sling swivel on front of trigger guard.

The condition of the barrel is excellent(bright) with only the cleaning rod and rear sight missing. The stock is in excellent condition. The extractor mechanism is missing but the gun functions when hammer cocked. A very fine, early military rifle which may well have been submitted for military trials versus what later would be adopted – the Springfield Trapdoor U.S. rifle.
