LSB#: 111214JM03
Make: Smith & Wesson
Model: .38 Single Action, Model 2, 2nd Issue
Serial Number: 80095
Year of Manufacture: 1877-1891
Caliber: .38 S&W
Action Type: Single Action Revolver, Top Break
Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A. Pat’d Jan. 17 / & 24. 65. July 11 65 Aug 24 69 July 25 71 May 11 1880”. The rear face of the cylinder is marked “80095”, as is the underside of the latch. The top surface of the frame, under the cylinder, is marked “9 / 5”. The butt is marked “8” (probably 80095), but the numbers following the “8” are obscured by the lanyard ring. The serial number is also found on the left grip frame under the grip panel.
Barrel Length: 5”
Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a blade front sight and a notch in the top strap for a rear sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are genuine Mother of Pearl. The grips show some shrinking on the front straps and losses to both panels. The grips rate in about Fair overall condition.
Type of Finish: Nickel
Finish Originality: Factory Original
Bore Condition: The bore is near bright and the rifling is strong, the entire length. There is minor erosion in the bore, though it is not heavy enough to call pitting. The bore is still quite good and very shootable.
Overall Condition: This gun retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some loss and patina from holster wear at the muzzle and left side of the barrel. The sides of the frame show very scattered discoloration and marking. The side plates fit very well. The cylinder shows a light drag line and the underside of the frame shows a small area of flaking. The screw heads are good, though just a bit worn. The markings are crisp. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly though we have not fired this gun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None, but the attached lanyard ring and tassel.
Our Assessment: These are great little guns, used by the Baltimore City Police from 1876 – 1917. Many prefer the Single Action to the Double Action, including myself, which is why Smith & Wesson was making Single Actions at a time when Double Actions were gaining prominence. This is a sharp gun, with an interesting lanyard and ring added.
