Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - -- Bavarian Werder Model 69 Cavalry Carbine, RARE

Bavarian Werder Model 69 Cavalry Carbine, RARE

This auction is for a very rare Bavarian Werder M69 Cavalry Carbine made in 1872. The M69 refers to the year the Werder was accepted in January 1869. The Cavalry Carbine differs from the Carbine in that it is shorter, has a full (Mannlicher Style) stock and has a saddle ring instead of carry strap hardware. I was assembled in the Amberg Arsenal Bavaria. Many parts were made by subcontractors. The action was manufactured by Greis in Munich as indicted by the "GF" marked on the breech. The barrel was manufactured by A. Francotte in Liege as indicated by its markings. The stock was also manufactured by Francotte as indicated by a fading cartouche stamped on the right side of the buttstock. This carbine is in excellent mechanical condition, observed as fully functional and has a shinny bore with good, sharp rifling (no rust or corrosion seen). Most of the metal finish is brown patina and there is evidence of surface rust and very light surface pitting. The stock is solid, no sign of cracks or rot. There are numerous bruises, dents and dings, no deep gouges. The major outside components have matching SR#’s. The internal components are all matching SR#’s. The sight leaf has a different SR# than either of the others; it looks original, we don’t know if it is supposed to match or not. It is a fine example of the rare Werder Cavalry Carbine. These are seldom seen in the US and are even rare in Europe. One sold recently in Europe for $4,950.00 and one here in the US for $3,900.00. This will be a very rare addition to someone’s collection.

HISTORY – The Werder was designed by Johann Ludwig Werder (1805-1885) and approved January 25th, 1869 King Ludwig II. The Werder action is similar in design to the Peabody rear hinged falling block action. The Werder differs from the Peabody-Martini in that it uses a simple thumb/finger actuated lever in the trigger guard to drop the breech and eject the spent round. This design is one of the very first to eject the spent cartridge case. It operates much faster than the Peabody-Martini which used a long underlever to operate the breech. The underlever design was very cumbersome to use prone. The Werder, because it’s high rate of fire (15-24 shots a minute), became known as the Blitzgewehr" Lightning Rifle. The Werder was produced in several variations, rifle, carbine, cavalry carbine & pistol. It was chambered for the 11mm lang (long) (11mmx41R originally and then 11mm Werder/11mmx50R) cartridge. The 11mm scharfe Patrone M/69 lang (long) is a rimmed, bottlenecked, brass case 50.6mm in length and was loaded with a 377 grain lead bullet and 67 grains of blackpowder. Muzzle velocity was approximately 1463 fps (446m/s). The Bayerisches-Carabiner M/69 was adopted for mounted troops. It is a shortened version of the infantry rifle, shorter than the infantry carbine; almost a long pistol rather than a short rifle. It has a muzzle length stock (Mannlicher Style) and a large saddle ring on the bottom of the stock wrist. To keep recoil and muzzle blast within reason, the 11mmx35R scharfe Patrone M/69 kurz (short) cartridge was adopted. It was loaded with a 340-grain lead bullet backed by 39 grains of blackpowder. It seems that this cartridge was later called or replaced by the 11.5mmx35R kurz. The marking on the top of the butt plate we believe refers to the 4th Royal Bavarian Division, 4th Bayerisches Kavallerie Brigade, 2nd Chavalegers Regiment

KAVALLERIE CARBINE SPECIFICATIONS - Bayerisches-Carabiner M/69. Caliber: 11 mm scharfe Patrone M/69 (kurz). Overall length: 31.75 inches. Barrel length: 15.5 inches. Weight: 7.7 pounds. Action: Single-shot, dropping breech. Sights: Front- Inverted V-blade. Rear- V-notch fixed for 300 schritt (paces/yards) fold-up leaf. for 500 schritt. Bayonet: None.

BEFORE YOU ASK WHAT THE RESERVE IS, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING…

RESERVE AUCTIONS:

We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment with us from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction if the high bidder does not reach the reserve buy to end the auction the high bidder or the seller may institute what Auction Arms calls a Haggle a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the Haggle process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.
