Buyer Tip: If you're the High Bidder in an auction when it closes, don't assume you're the final High Bidder. Someone could outbid you in the final seconds of the auction if your Max Bid isn't high enough. You're not the high Bidder until you've been notified by email that you are. Seller's Description

Vintage Faultless Gas Cartridge Firing Device

This auction features a Faultless Gas Cartridge Firing Device. This item was manufactured based on US Patent number 1772656, filed June 23, 1928 and granted August 12, 1930. It was designed By Scott M. Abbott. See this link for the actual drawings and description: This item was manufactured in the late 1920's by Federal Laboratories of Pittsburgh, PA and sold under the trade name of Faultless. Their original design and only purpose was to enable an innocuous device appearing as a standard fountain pen to be able to discharge a tear gas cartridge. No productions numbers are known. However, they were limited. This item was used by law enforcement. Unsubstantiated use by covert operatives such as the OSS has also been attributed to this device. This particular device is in outstanding, functional condition. See this link for one sold here in 2008: Its condition is within 90% of new. The Faultless name is clearly visible on the clip and the patent number is clearly visible on the plunger/cocking device. The pictures show the device cocked and uncocked. When cocked, a ball bearing would enter the orifice in the top of the pen and upon pressing the bearing the tear gas cartridge would be discharged. through the barrel of the pen. You can see the spring in the photo showing the device in the uncocked position. The clip on the pen acted as a safety and turns on the pen to enable access to the ball bearing. This item is rare and as a retired law enforcement office I can only verify its provenance for the past forty years. However, it is genuine. Cartridges have not been available for this device for decades. Its history prior to my ownership is unknown. However, I do wonder? This device is not a firearm and was never designed or intended to be used as such. It appears to be made of brass and weighs about 1.4 ounces. The barrel is smooth and very light and would never be able to withstand the pressure created by any type of center fire ammunition. Do not attempt it. You will destroy the device and possibly injure yourself. Free insured shipping will be provided by USPS Priority Mail upon receipt of cleared payment. Money Orders will take ten days after receipt. Bank certified checks will take five days. PayPal will ship in three. I will be glad to respond to any inquiries. Thanks for looking and good luck.
