Rare Antique Chinese Hookah or Water Pipe
Offered herein is a most unusual and scarce
“Chinese” hookah or water pipe. A hookah,
or narghile, is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) instrument for smoking in which the smoke is cooled by water. The tobacco smoked
is referred to as shisha (sheesha) in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. Thought to have originated in Persia at the court of the
Mughal emperor Akbar I, who “first passed the smoke of tobacco through a small bowl of water to purify and cool the smoke and thus invented
the hubble-bubble or hookah in the 16th century, smoking the hookah gained popularity, especially in the Middle East . There were many types and designs of the hookah
from Africa to the Middle East (generally glass) however the most ornate and desirable are those Chinese patterns. The Chinese generally preferred to use some type of metal over glass for the “bowl” and for the portion of the pipe
which contains the water. Intricately designed metal bowls-filagreed, painted and enameled-elevate these Chinese bubble pipes into exquisite works of art. Tobacco (sometimes mixed with opium) goes in the small upright tube. The set is complete and in excellent condition.
