Rare old original Trapdoor Springfield 45-70 cylindrical RESIZING DIE, made at Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia, undated 1882-1885. This was part of a frontier era US Field Reloading Set, for reloading in the field, to make best re-use of ammunition allotments. Measures about 2 inches long by about 1 + 1/8 inch wide. Solid cylinder shape with a slightly tapered hole smoothly bored through + polished. Was used to re-size the empty 45-70 cartridge case after firing. Marked - FRANKFORD ARSENAL RESIZING DIE + inspectors initials. One end marked - TOP. Guaranteed - OVER 100 YEARS OLD. These were purchased by the famous W. Stokes Kirk of Philadelphia, 1876-1974 in the 1920s. Very good condition. Of high quality Sheffield England rolled steel bar stock, milled + finished at Frankford Arsenal. Outside of cylinder purposely left unpolished for better finger grip. I bought several of these + other items from the old Reloading Kits, in the early 1970s. Have had them for nearly 40 years,.
