Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - 32 S&W Iver Johnson Top Break -- Hammerless Safety Automatic Double Action Revolver

LSB#: 110905RS14

Make: Iver Johnson

Model: Hammerless Safety Automatic – Double Action Top Break

Serial Number: 18861

Year of Manufacture: 1897-1908. Help us to further refine the date of manufacture. The serial number is low and this could be an antique. In the Hammerless Iver Johnson’s Safety Automatic Models, the First Model was made from 1895 to 1896 and can be quickly identified by the single post frame latch. The Second Model was made from 1897 to 1908, and there is a safety lever added onto the face of the trigger (not unlike modern day Glocks). The Third Model was designed for smokeless powder and was made from 1909 to 1941. The black powder guns have free-wheeling cylinders at rest. This gun has a free wheeling cylinder.

Caliber: .32 S&W

Action Type: Top Break Double Action Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked "Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works / Fitchburg Mass. U.S.A.". The serial number "18861" is found on the bottom of the trigger guard. The bottom of the grip frame is marked " Pat. Jun. 16 '96 Aug 25 96 / Pats Pending".

Barrel Length: 3 1/4"

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a blade front sight and a cut in the latch for a rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock(s) is/are hard rubber and very well fitted. these grips are in very good condition with no losses or cracks.

Type of Finish: Blue / Case Colored Trigger and Latch.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The rifling is sharp and deep. The bore has some recent fouling which needs further cleaning, and there is some minor erosion in the grooves. This should clean up well.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 70% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows much scattered original finish, with patina mixed in. The barrel, trigger guard and cylinder are blue. There is scattered surface frosting and minor erosion throughout. The metal is smooth with just some slight erosion. The trigger and latch show nice case hardened color. The trigger guard has some erosion on both sides for and aft of the trigger. The Screw heads are mostly sharp and show just minor disfiguration. The markings are clear, except for the last patent date. Overall, this gun rates in about very good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly double action. The lockup is OK with slight movement to the left, typical. At rest, the cylinder will freely rotate to the right. The latch is functional and in good condition.

Box & Accessories: There is a modern holster provided with this gun that fits on a set of suspender straps / braces. There is both a strap and buckle and "double button" leather strap on the bottom. The top has a screw-in concho. The holster is unmarked and in very good condition with no tears or losses.

Our Assessment: If you are looking for a good serviceable pocket pistol for cowboy action sides matches or are a collector of vintage revolvers, this is a great gun for you. There is plenty of rifling and bluing left on this gun, which is till functional and in good firing condition.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: The gun can be transferred in California and is C&R eligible, and can be private party transferred at our shop in Simi Valley.

Questions for Users
(Public)
Q:  If this is a third model, will the cylinder free wheel in both directions? 10/12/2011
A:  Thank you for your question. The cylinder does not "free wheel" to the left at rest, only to the right. Thanks. Lew. 10/13/2011
