Bore Condition: The rifling is medium depth and clearly visible. The bore is bright. There is no apparent erosion.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 50% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows age, and light usage. The finish shows much handling wear and beginning age discoloration. The Screw heads are sharp and not disfigured. The crewheads are dark . The markings are non existent. Overall, this gun rates in about good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly as follows: the left side thumb lever releases the slide to move rearward after the trigger is pulled this rearward movement must be accomplished manually, the slide is then manually pushed forward picking up the next round from the magazine. The trigger audibly fires. We did not shoot this gun. .

Box & Accessories: There is no box.

Our Assessment: There is a long and interesting story around this gun. This gun was researched and commented on by Charles E. Petty for Guns Magazine in September 1990. Here are his comments. The pistol is a FIALA or SCHALL and bears a strong resemblance to the High Standard. The pistol was designed by Lucius Diehm and sold by major Anthony Fiala who gained some fame as an arctic explorer in the mid 1900s. Fiala favored a manually operated repeating pistol because of doubt about how well an automatic would function under arctic conditions. These pistols were made by J.E. Schall & Co. of New Haven Connecticut and when Fiala went broke Schall marketed some of these guns under their own name. Hartford Arms and Equipment acquired the Diehm patents and made a single shot and an automatic during the depression and were purchased by High Standard. The Diehm auto pistol became the High Standard Model B. Additonal information can be found in ann article from Gun Digest 1983. Of interesting note is that this gun has the 7 1/2:" barrel common to Fiala but also has the twin serration slide and pinned barrel of the Schall. The last known manufacturing date is thought to be 1935. A copy of this article will be shipped with this gun.
