Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a thin bladed front sight in a base set in a dovetail slot. The blade appears to be handmade. The rear sight is a standard leaf type missing its elevator.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock(s) is/are wood, the forend is in good servicable condition with a small crack on the bottom, between the screws. There are a few dings and finish losses to the stock but there appears to be much finish remaining. The buttstock appears to have been sanded at some point. The buttplate is marked "Stevens Favorite", there are small chips missing at the heel and toe. There are many dings gouges and mars but the stock is in good servicable condition with no major cracks.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: All original.
Bore Condition: The rifling is medium deep, and visible the entire length, the bore is relatively good with some graying and minor light erosion which may clean up well.
Overall Condition: This gun retains about 30% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear and age mostly on the receiver. The barrel remains a blue/gray with scattered light surface erosion mixed with patina. The Screw heads show wear and several screws have been replaced with whatever screws were handy. The markings are clearly visible. Overall, this gun rates in about fair condition.
Mechanics: The action is not working at this time, but it appears the last time it was disassembled it was not re-assembled correctly. The pump action is not sliding back to its rear most position. When viewing the slide bar from below, it appears a key slide bar slot was not engaged to the internal action. The hammer cocks and holds and the trigger releases the hammer when pulled. The firing pin and extractors are present in the slide/bolt/block..
Box & Accessories: There is no box.
Our Assessment: This is a relatively rare gun. We believe that with a little effort this gun can be re-assembled properly. The barrel actually seems to be in pretty good shape indicating that it wasn't fired all that much. It appears that all parts are present. This is a rare chance to obtain a J.Stevens pump action repeating rifle, Attention Stevenes and early .22 collectors!
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This gun is C & R eligible, and is California legal.
