Seller's Description:

French Lebel Model 1886 M93 8mm LEBEL (8x50R)

This Model 1886/93 Lebel was manufactured in the Tulle Arsenal. Even though the history on the Lebel says production ended in 1920 this rifle is marked “MA T1921 N.” It has the standard 31” barrel and the bore is very nice, very good rifling, shinny, no rust or corrosion. The barrel finish is very good with some thinning/browning near the muzzle. The receiver blue is also very good with old a few blemishes & scratches. Mechanically it seems to function correctly and action is tight and smooth. It shows minimal wear (see photos). The trigger guard is bare metal with some tarnish. The wood is marred, scarred and bruised but it is sound, no cracks. The serial numbers on the butt stock & buttplate match but they do not match the serial numbers of the forestock, receiver & bolt. Also include is the bayonet and scabbard also in very good condition (not number to the rifle). These bayonets are valued at around $100.00. Overall a nice rifle and we rate it NRA Good. If you have always wanted a Lebel this one may be the one and it look like it would be a shooter.

A bit of the history of the Lebel.

The Lebel Model 1886 rifle (French official designation: Fusil Modèle 1886-M93) is an 8mm bolt action rifle which entered service in the French Army in April 1887. It has the distinction of being the first military rifle designed to use nitrocellulose-based (Poudre "B") the first practical smokeless gunpowder which had been invented by Paul Vieille in 1884. The Lebel was also the first rifle to introduce, in 1901, a boat-tailed bullet (" Balle D ") as standard military ammunition. The Lebel M1886 rifle had a 10-round capacity (eight in the forestock tube magazine, one in the transporter, and one in the chamber) and also mounted a spike bayonet which entered service in the French Army in April 1887. It was developed at MAC (Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault), manufactured at MAS (Manufacture d'Armes St. Etienne), and at MAT (Manufacture d'Armes de Tulle) until May 1920. The total number of Lebel rifles manufactured adds up to two million eight hundred and eighty thousand (2,880,000). The Lebel rifle remained in partial service in the French army until 1940 although the shape of its rimmed ammunition and its tube magazine were both obsolete as early as 1900. BEFORE YOU ASK WHAT THE RESERVE IS, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING…

RESERVE AUCTIONS:

We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing the Reserve makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction the bidder is not necessarily aiming to hit the reserve. The bidder is however aiming to be the high bidder. When the auction ends the high bidder may request a HAGGLE or the seller may initiate a HAGGLE. This is a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the HAGGLE process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.
