Well, Phil, when I get a gun on a transfer, I open it immediately and put it into my book. If the buyer is there, fine, if not, he has to depend on my observation of the gun. Per BATFE rules a FFL holder has only so long to put a gun into the books once possession is taken, I believe 48 hrs, or maybe even only 24. I take no chances and put it in as soon as I get it. Sometimes I have waited over a week for the buyer to show up and I am sure not waiting that long with an unopened gun in a package. JMHO |

If you print your own UPS labels,as we do,the second line under the destination/FFL's name is a place listed as Notify. This is where we show the customers name, cuts out a lot of confusion when it gets to destination, with the customers name plainly visible on the UPS label. |

Phil38, the dealer must open it and enter the firearm in his books. Unless you know exactly how the seller shipped it, USPS, Fedex, UPS, etc. and you spend every day at the receiving dealer until it shows up there's not much chance of you being there to open it so the dealer can get the serial number anyway. |

Phil38: I always address my firearm shipment to the buyer's name first C/O the receiving FFL. I also make the receipt out in the same manner. (i.e.)
John Doe I also never use any verbage that would indicate that a firearm may be inside. I use abreviations like G&A for Guns & Ammo. Nest time that you have a firearm shipped to your FFL ask the shipper to address it to you C/O the FFL. Just the way I do it. FR&G |

| (no avatar) | So far only ONE had the serial # entered before I arrived and a lot of my stuff don't even have numbers. If you open it then you take responsibility for the shipment right? If there are parts missing or damage not indicated on the outside package material YOU become the responsible party. Seems like a lot of potential hassle for not wanting to wait a few hours. If I get a tracking # (most don't send one) I know when to make myself available to come pick it up so big waits can be avoided and cuts down on the "WHO" part of the shipment. There are some very nice AA sellers in the north east that send "Goodies" with their shipments and one guy I used had the stuff over on his kitchen counter. If my name is on the box and I am notified when it arrives I am on my way, No need to open it and it would relieve a lot of suspicion without hurting anyone. As HG & FR&G posted it ain't that hard to put a name on it. The FFL I use the most don't like to open them but if there is nothing on the outside to give her a clue who it's for then she has to. The more liability put on the receiver the more they need to charge for CYA and the less attractive YOUR gun is to purchase. |

No, Phil, if I open it, I am doing what I am SUPPOSED to do and am BOUND to do by the licensing authority, the BATFE. I don't care what the buyer wants unless he can get here PRONTO on the day the gun arrives. He does not show, his loss, not mine. I also always put the buyers name on our labels. However, as long as it's a b***h session, it sure would be nice to have a BUYER put some info on the payment they send me or the FFL they send. We have anywhere from 10 to 20 auctions close at a time. When the FFL's arrive by fax, it is a wild goose chase, akin to "where's Waldo" to figure out which one belongs to who. Common sense dosen't always apply it seems, on either end, buyer OR seller. |

| (no avatar) | When I send payment the auction number is always on the payment. What the FFLs do is out of my control but around here they seem to be an independant lot. I give them a printed copy of the auction with my name and phone number as well. There should be no reason other than getting a package they can't identify readily from the outside not to call me when it arrives. Would be simple if it was a perfect world I know but with my name outside and my phone number where ever they put the paper I gave them, I get call, I drive over, WE open the box and EVERYBODY is satisfied, EVEN BATFE! NO PROBLEM! . . Oh and this wasn't meant to be a bash session,....Just lively discusion! |

When i send my FFL out to receive a transfer i always ask the customer what did he purchase and from who, and list it on the bottom of the FFL I'm sending and keep the info on record also for me.When the package arrives,i know what it is,who it's for, then i put everything in the A&D book except the serial number and enter that when the customer opens the box. Then he knows if there is a problem or something missing he can take it up with the seller.I have never had to wait on a customer to pick up a transferred firearm more than two days. |

| (no avatar) | Hartwell I think I like you! If my memory is corect you have till close of the next business day to log it in, If its not the next day I am sure you have till the end of the first day. I have had one tell me I couldn't take it because he could not call in a NICS after 4:30 PM Central time! So I had to make 2 trips for 1 gun and the next day my gun looked like it had been shot recently. Oh well I guess I'll just get my own #. |

We always call a customer who has a gun sent to us IF we know that the box is for them. If they arrive within the allotted time frame, they get to open it with us. However, that usually dosen't nhappe, as most of the time, we do not know who a package is for until we open it, or when we DO call someone they don't show for a week or so. That said, Hartwell seems to have an efficient system one I wish I were organized enough to employ! I WILL admit I like puzzles, and usually on the Monday and Tuesday after my auctions close, we ALWAYS have a goodly number of puzzles to solve. |
